Safe weapons can be defined as weapons specifically manufactured to endure the grueling demands of stage work. Theatrical weapons are used in a manner that historical weapons were never meant for; bashing together hundreds of times in the same place, disarms on all manner of surfaces, heavy-handed actors who possess no training or technique, and all done over weeks of rehearsal and months of 8 show weeks. Ideally, blades, hilts, and pummels should be made of steel. Only blades specifically made for theatrical use should be considered.

What to avoid:

  • Attractive "wall hangers", no matter how expensive.
  • Spot welded tangs.
  • Shallow, or poorly threaded pummels. If the pummel wobbles as you loosen or tighten it, leave it on the wall.
  • Sharp weapons (try acting).
  • Products from companies who will not guarantee that their product is specifically manufactured for safe stage use.

Use common sense when purchasing a weapon. Remember, no matter how beautiful a weapon appears in the pictures, it could still shatter on stage and send shards of steel flying into the audience, the orchestra pit, or your partner’s face. Check the track record of the company’s product with people who have used them. Quality steel is more expensive and takes more time to acquire, but think of the savings in re-blading costs and lawyer’s fees.
